Unearthing the secrets of West Penwith on a fascinating tour around an area of Cornwall with the highest density of ancient monuments in the UK. Stone circles, carns, barrows, quoits, menhirs, castles and Spriggans…..it’s a whole other world!
Discover the ancient heart of Cornwall on this immersive 8-hour West Penwith walking and driving tour, exploring some of the most important prehistoric sites in Britain. This carefully curated full-day experience takes you through dramatic moorland, rugged Atlantic coastline, and historic mining landscapes while uncovering over 5,000 years of history.
Drift Stones (Sisters)
We begin at the atmospheric Drift Stones, locally known as the Sisters. These striking granite outcrops rise from open moorland overlooking Cape Cornwall and the Atlantic Ocean. Wrapped in folklore and surrounded by expansive coastal views, they offer the perfect introduction to the wild landscapes and ancient atmosphere of West Penwith.
The Blind Fiddler
This enigmatic standing stone is associated with the legend of a musician turned to stone for playing on the Sabbath. Here, we explore the deep connection between Cornwall’s prehistoric monuments and its rich storytelling traditions.
Carn Euny
One of the best-preserved ancient villages in Cornwall, Carn Euny features stone roundhouses and a mysterious underground fogou unique to West Cornwall archaeology. A highlight for anyone interested in Iron Age Britain.
Boscawen-Un Stone Circle
A must-see on any Cornwall stone circle tour, Boscawen-Un dates to the Bronze Age and features a distinctive leaning central stone. This sacred ceremonial site remains one of the most important prehistoric landmarks in Cornwall.
Chapel Carn Brea
Climb to one of Cornwall’s most sacred hilltops, used from Neolithic through early Christian times. From the summit, enjoy panoramic views across West Penwith — and on clear days, as far as the Isles of Scilly.
St Just
We pause in this historic Cornish mining town for refreshments. Part of the Cornwall and West Devon Mining Landscape World Heritage Site, St Just offers granite architecture, rich heritage, and authentic local character.
Ballowall Barrow
Perched dramatically above the Atlantic, this rare multi-period burial monument combines Bronze Age and later features. It is one of the most scenic and archaeologically significant ancient sites in West Penwith.
Men-an-Tol
Perhaps Cornwall’s most iconic prehistoric monument, this holed stone is linked to ancient healing rituals and folklore. A fascinating stop on any guided archaeology tour in West Cornwall.
Chun Castle & Chun Quoit
We conclude at these spectacular neighbouring monuments high on the moor. Chun Castle is one of the best-preserved Iron Age hillforts in Cornwall, while Chun Quoit is a striking Neolithic burial chamber dating back over 4,000 years. Together they form one of Britain’s most impressive prehistoric landscapes.
